This Mediterranean Revival and Tudor mansion was designed by Willis Polk for Fanny Osbourne Stevenson, widow of Robert Louis Stevenson1Here's how Stevenson described her: https://nakamurabranchevska.com/2025/10/27/r-l-stevenson-on-fanny-osborn/, and is said to have been paid for by the proceeds from the Treasure Island. Note Polk's signature arched doorway.
Polk was a friend of the Stevensons and designed the Stevenson memorial in Portsmouth Square. Hard as it may be to believe this house used to be significantly larger, the building around the corner at 1100 Lombard St was part of it.
Other notable owners have been James Phelan (San Francisco's mayor and later a U. S. Senator) and a Carmelite convent.
