Jack Early park - Reumah's Tour

Jack Early park

Telegraph Hill

As many San Francisco parks, this one was created by a local, Jack Early, and despite being officially a city park is being supported and kept up by the neighbors. Jack Early built the stairs from donated railroad ties, planted the trees, carried water in buckets up the stairs, and when the eucalyptus grew put down the benches to sit and look at the lights of Alcatraz in the evening. He called this park Alcatraz Heights, but in 1987 when it was officially dedicated the city named it after him in recognition of the 25 years he spent building it.

Go up the stairs for some great views of the Bay. There's just enough space there for two people, perhaps three, if they are intimately friendly with each other.

Listen carefully, and you might hear the sea lions barking at Fisherman's Wharf. If you look carefully you'll see Bay Bridge, and Golden Gate, and even San Rafael brige with Red Rock island underneath it.
