Flag House

Russian Hill

This is one of 10 surviving 1850s houses in San Francisco. Before evacuating in the fire of 1906 the owner hung an American flag in front and left a full tub of water. The flag inspired the firefighters so much, that they used sand from a construction site nearby and bathtub water to save the building. Ina Coolbrith park next door is the site where her house used to stand before the fire. Unfortunately, it was flagless.
