Old Chronicle (de Young) Building

Financial District

This is San Francisco's first skyscraper. Completed in 1889 and re-built by Willis Polk after the 1906 earthquake it was the tallest building on the West Coast. It was totally fireproof, entirely lit by electricity, and on the top of it was the world's largest clock.

Unfortunately, "fire proof" is not the same as rocket-proof. The four-story bronze clock tower was accidentally destroyed by rockets launched in 1905 during "Handsome Gene" Schmitz's mayoral re-election victory parade.

Although it is called Old Chronicle Building it is not the first one. Chronicle's first offices were nearby at the corner of Kearny and Bush. The new one is at 901 Mission St.

Besides San Francisco Chronicle this building housed a number of small businesses, including the offices of San Francisco's first female dentist.
