This fountain was dedicated on February 14th, 1973, a Valentine's Day gift from Ruth Asawa to San Francisco. Coincidentally, modeling the fountain took fourteen hundred pounds of flour.
Spend some time here to decide where you want to go next. Can you find the frogs? The mermaid from her other fountain at Ghirardelli square?
Do you see Alvarado elementary school? Little figures there were made by students in the program Asawa established.
To the right of the school you'll see a tree and Ruth Asawa's home, with her daughter's wedding guests coming out.
Some landmarks, like the Fleischacker pool are no longer here, but that just makes the fountain more interesting.
