San Francisco is known for its cable cars1https://www.sfmta.com/getting-around/muni/cable-cars/cable-car-history. Riding them is one of the best ways to take in the views2I suggest you ride the California St line and at least one of the other two (Powell/Hyde and Powell/Mason). For the most fun sit or stand outside and board anywhere other than Powell and Market.. But to really appreciate them you should spend half an hour at the free Cable Car Museum and see the giant sheaves and cables. There are also vintage cable cars, statues of heroic dogs, interesting historical exhibits, and a cute little gift shop.
Cable cars are seen in too many movies to list, but some notable ones are Dark Passage (1947), The Love Bug (1969), The Rock (1996), and Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011). My favorite one is A Trip Down Market St (1906)3https://mtc.ca.gov/news/trip-down-market-street-19062017.
