Wolf (William) Haas came to America to build a family. The laws of his native Bavaria forbade most Jews (except firstborn sons) to marry and have children. He worked hard, and prospered, and he married a local woman, Bertha Greenbaum, and he built the best home for his new family that money could buy.
The Queen Anne Haas Lilienthal mansion built out of fir and redwood cost $18,500 to construct. For comparison, the normal cost of building a house in 1886 was between $700 and $2,000. Perhaps that is why it turned out to be strong enough to withstand the 1906 earthquake with only minor damage.
Today this is the headquarters of San Francisco Heritage and the only regularly open private Victorian house in SF. It is very worth visiting, but if you cannot visit it right now check out their website https://www.haas-lilienthalhouse.org/.
The Haas-Lilienthal house appears in Dying Young (1991) starring Julia Roberts.
