Belden Place

Financial District

This cute little pedestrian street is named after the first mayor of San Jose, Josiah Belden, a member of the first American emigrant party to cross by wagon from Missouri to California. He arrived in 1841 and owned the block between here and Kearny St. This is where the three thousand or so immigrants sponsored by the French government settled when they arrived in 1851. The next year Alexandre Dumas Sr. described the local fusion cousine as "abominable" without ever coming within twenty thousand leagues of it. Despite his opinion, I'm confident that you will find something you enjoy here or on the parallel block, across Kearny St.
