Jimi Hendrix's Red House

Haight Ashbury

Jimi Hendrix never lived here. Hendrix expert and principal behind the Hendrix digital rights case, Keith Dion, called the claim "a bunch of shit". Late Charles Cross was equally blunt: "I can tell you unequivocally that is in complete error." Hendrix did play the Bay Area and came through San Francisco for the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival - but he never owned or rented property in the city.

He recorded "Red House" in London in December 1966, six months before he first set foot in San Francisco. All of this is well known, but the building is red, the song is iconic, and the legend stuck.

In June 2022 artist Sean Griffin added a Hendrix mural to the side wall that sealed the deal for most visitors. If you stop by for photos get some sandwiches from the organic grocery store next door - they are genuinely good.
