Ross Alley used to be known as Street of the Gamblers before the fire of 1906. Establishments had series of reinforced steel doors and tunnels underneath to slow down law enforcement and rival gangs.
You may remember this little street from movies: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Karate Kid II, and Big Trouble in Little China.
Now it is mainly known as the home of the Fortune Cookie company where as many as 10,000 cookies are made by hand every day as they have been since 1962. While the first fortune cookie to be sold in USA was, indeed, sold in San Francisco it was sold at the Japanese Tea Garden and not here.
Go in to see the process and get a warm sample. Try the fancy glazed cookies.
