Built in 1895, it is one of California’s earliest pure Arts and Crafts buildings, designed by A. Page Brown, a prominent contributor to the City Beautiful movement in San Francisco and architect-theologian Joseph Worcester with contributions from A. C. Schweinfurth, A. Page Brown, Bernard Maybeck, William Keith, and Bruce Porter.
It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2004.
The church’s architecture emphasizes natural materials, craftsmanship, and harmony with the surroundings, reflecting the philosophy of Emanuel Swedenborg, which seeks to unify the spiritual and natural worlds.
HBO’s Hemingway and Gellhorn (2012) used it as one of many Bay Area locations portraying World War II Spain.
