The Grateful Dead's communal house (c. 1965-1968) at the heart of San Francisco's psychedelic scene, with Jerry Garcia and bandmates living and working here during the Haight's peak.
Several band members lived here, including founding member Bob Weir, who shared an attic room with Neal Cassady - the man who inspired Dean Moriarty in Kerouac's 'On the Road' and Cody Pomeray in 'Visions of Cody,' and was the living bridge between the Beat Generation and the psychedelic rock era.
On October 2, 1967, SFPD narcotics agents accompanied by TV crews raided the house and arrested multiple residents, an emblematic Haight-Ashbury bust that captured national attention. Fortunately, Jerry Garcia was able to avoid arrest by hiding out in the Hell's Angels house across the street.
